The groove in this track influenced a sound that defines an era in NYC music history, so long ago.
For me, this was the highlight of my Saturday night / Sunday morning, as a teenager, recording onto cassettes shows by DJ Red Alert on KISS FM and the mix running on WBLS.
You knew it was late into the night and early in the morning when this song came pumping out of those sets, it was part of the “dark” sound that emphasizes a sort of minimalism, conveying the feel of being a dark room of a warehouse club, dancing with others who love music just as intensely as you would, and when all others have gone home for the night.
With the current wave of the genre, nu disco, if you listen closely, you can recognize elements in tracks produced in that genre that are borne out of this legendary song.
This brings me back…
This song captures an era of music, from the late 1980s to early 1990s.
I’m loving this at the moment. South Africa saved house music.
“Holdin’ On” by Michael Watford (1991)
I totally forgot how many classics Michael Watford made. This is definitely one of them. I got a chance to see him live at Shelter NYC and he tore it up.

Love this.

I call this set Jewel - my aim was to duplicate the vibe and feel of what it was like to show up to a club at 5 a.m. Sunday morning, in New York City back in the day, and dance to the deep dark sounds echoing through the big room of the warehouse club. The sound is moody.
It’s a jewel of a memory for me and it’s what I aim for in my sets whenever I play out late into the night and into the morning.
Take a listen and enjoy.
